While preparing for this year’s Keswick Victorian Fayre, a rather curious document was uncovered in the town archives—tucked, appropriately enough, between a crate of bunting and several questionable jars of preserved quince.
The manuscript appears to be written in the hand of one Dr. John H. Watson—or a very convincing imitation—and details a startling episode involving industrial sabotage, espionage, and murder during the festive season of 1885. The events unfold beneath the very streets of Keswick, casting new light on just how close the town came to calamity.
How the document arrived in the archive—and why it remained sealed for over a century—is a matter for speculation.
But we are delighted to present it now, for the first time,
as The Keswick Copper Conspiracy.
