Keswick Victorian Fayre
Sunday 6th December 2026
The Keswick Victorian Fayre is brimming with Christmas wonder and a truly warm Cumbrian welcome. We are thrilled to announce that we will have entertainment all day long, with performers bringing magic to both the Main Stage in the Market Square and the festive Pack Horse Court.
What we cant tell you yet is who the performers are. We are working hard this summer to find you the very best entertainment we can.
One of the most magical parts of the Keswick Victorian Fayre is seeing the streets filled with characters from the past! Getting dressed up is the best way to get into the spirit of the day, and it doesn't have to be complicated.
Remember, it's December in Keswick, so warmth is key! Think layers, scarves, and perhaps even a warm coat over your costume. Whether you go for a full outfit or just a simple nod to the era—like a top hat or a bonnet—you'll be adding to the wonderful, festive atmosphere.
We have fantastic, free costume competitions for children every hour. And for the grown-ups, we simply can't wait to see your Victorian finery. Let's make this a day to remember!
The Base: A long (maxi) skirt (wear warm leggings/tights underneath!) and a high-necked, long-sleeved blouse (a smart shirt buttoned all the way up, worn over a thermal top, is perfect).
The Key Item: A substantial shawl, pashmina, or small capelet in wool or velvet. This instantly creates that Victorian shape and provides vital warmth.
The Finishing Touches: A simple bonnet, a small "percher" hat on a clip, or just a flower in your hair. A simple brooch at the neck of your blouse looks fantastic. Don't forget warm gloves and comfortable, sensible shoes!
It's a comfortable, elegant, and fun way to step back in time with us, while staying perfectly cosy!
The Base: Any smart, long-sleeved shirt (worn over a thermal vest!) and dark trousers.
The Waistcoat: This is essential for that Victorian look. Layer a thin jumper under it for warmth, or a smart tweed jacket/blazer over it.
The Hat: This is where you make your mark! After all, what's a Victorian fayre without a top hat? A bowler or a smart flat cap also works perfectly.
The Finishing Touches: A warm cravat (a simple neck scarf), a bow tie, or a pocket watch chain. A smart overcoat or wool jacket completes the look and keeps you warm.
Join in the fun—we'd love to see a town full of top hats!
For Girls:
Use any warm party dress (especially velvet or tartan). Layer a long-sleeved top underneath for extra warmth.
Add a warm shawl, pashmina, or small cape over the dress.
The key item: A warm bonnet (a simple hat with a ribbon tied under the chin is perfect) or a decorative muff to keep hands warm.
Warm tights or leggings are a must!
For Boys:
Smart trousers and a warm, long-sleeved shirt.
The key item: A waistcoat and a bow tie. Layer a warm jumper under the waistcoat for hidden warmth.
A smart flat cap or small bowler hat.
It's a wonderful way to look the part and stay toasty!
What you'll need:
Trousers (roll them up to the shins!)
A long-sleeved shirt (a bit mismatched is perfect), worn over a warm vest.
A warm waistcoat or even a warm jumper over the shirt (this is the key item for the look and warmth!). An old adult one cut down works great.
A flat cap.
Essential for December: A warm, chunky scarf and fingerless gloves (just cut the fingertips off an old pair).
It's a great, characterful outfit that’s perfect for running around the Fayre and enjoying the fun while staying warm.
What you'll need:
Old, dark trousers (or leggings)
A dark, long-sleeved top or old shirt, worn over a warm base layer.
A simple, dark waistcoat or a dark jumper to layer over the shirt.
A flat cap (a must-have!)
Warm gloves or fingerless mittens.
A little bit of face paint or smudged eyeliner for a "soot" smudge on the cheeks.
It's warm, comfortable for walking around, and a guaranteed winner in the costume competition.
