Fayre Costume Idea: The Cosy Victorian Street Urchin

A cartoon diagram showing a child in a warm Victorian street urchin costume with a cap, waistcoat, and scarf
Inspired by characters like the Artful Dodger, the Victorian Street Urchin is a fun and easy costume to put together from items you already have, with layers for warmth.

What you'll need:

  • Trousers (roll them up to the shins!)

  • A long-sleeved shirt (a bit mismatched is perfect), worn over a warm vest.

  • A warm waistcoat or even a warm jumper over the shirt (this is the key item for the look and warmth!). An old adult one cut down works great.

  • A flat cap.

  • Essential for December: A warm, chunky scarf and fingerless gloves (just cut the fingertips off an old pair).

It's a great, characterful outfit that’s perfect for running around the Fayre and enjoying the fun while staying warm.

Don't forget, we have free costume competitions for children every hour! Just come and register your child at the main Keswick Victorian Fayre stall when you arrive.

We love seeing adults in costume, too. After all, what's a Victorian fayre without a top hat or two?
