Fayre Costume Idea: The Warm, Smart Victorian Child

A cartoon diagram showing a child in a warm, smart Victorian dress with a bonnet and shawl

Want to use those nice "party clothes" to create a Victorian look, perfect for a cold December day? Easy! A smart Victorian child is a lovely costume that's all about the layers and accessories.

For Girls:

  • Use any warm party dress (especially velvet or tartan). Layer a long-sleeved top underneath for extra warmth.

  • Add a warm shawl, pashmina, or small cape over the dress.

  • The key item: A warm bonnet (a simple hat with a ribbon tied under the chin is perfect) or a decorative muff to keep hands warm.

  • Warm tights or leggings are a must!

For Boys:

  • Smart trousers and a warm, long-sleeved shirt.

  • The key item: A waistcoat and a bow tie. Layer a warm jumper under the waistcoat for hidden warmth.

  • A smart flat cap or small bowler hat.

It's a wonderful way to look the part and stay toasty!

Don't forget, we have free costume competitions for children every hour! Just come and register your child at the main Keswick Victorian Fayre stall when you arrive.

We love seeing adults in costume, too. After all, what's a Victorian fayre without a top hat or two?
